Luigi Salerno research papers 1955-1992.

This collection of research papers of Luigi Salerno (1924-1992) documents the productive career of one of Italy's most recognized art historians. Consisting of five thousand photographs, many stamped and annotated, inter-filed with correspondence and research notes, as well as separately filed correspondence and appraisal records. The collection comprehensively documents his numerous contributions to the history 17th and 18th century art in Italy, such as the discovery of two Caravaggio paintings in the early 1960s and groundbreaking work on Guercino's paintings and drawings, as well as extensive research on Luca Giordano and Salvator Rosa. The collection is comprised of three sections: research files on projects including major artists, publications and exhibitions; correspondence and appraisals (1956-1990), the main correspondent is Denis Mahon, one of the modern fathers of baroque art history; and the photo archive consisting of about 3,500 photographs representing 300 artists, primarily Italian and Dutch, research notes and offprints.
